The Place
Walter and Marianne Karner have expanded Gasthof Seewirt, their holiday hotel on the eastern edge of Lake Neusiedl, which has echoes of sea-side Greece or Spain. It has a 1992-built annexe, the Haus Attila, and it is here that our inspector feels that families will have an enjoyable holiday. The lake view on a hazy day is stunning, with sailing boats and windsurfers flickering over the water. Lawns and poplar trees surround the buildings which have developed from the simple peasant house pictured on the entrance hall wall, dating from 1924.
The third generation of Karners demolished that in 1979 and put up the square, ordinary Seewirt, followed more recently by the Attila. ‘Make sure you book into the Attila’ is our inspector’s advice. Here, the white bedrooms new pine furniture and offer much more space for the blue and white easy chairs and sofas. The food is Pannonian, reflecting the quasi-Hungarian cuisine using local carp, zander and eel, accompanied by Herr Karner’s own wines.
