The Place
Sitting at the heart of Austria’s burgeoning wine territory, the Weinresidenz Sonnleitner is an interesting mixture of old and new.
The views are ancient ones – gnarled vines twist and tug their way on all sides, punctuated by only a handful of premises and the stunning abbey of Gottweig. Inside the hotel, however, and all is new.
The large bedrooms are a little plain but light and airy. The reception and breakfast room, full of wood panelling and mood lighting, are rather more fetching while the stone-clad wine cellar and lounge is altogether captivating for those interested in tasting one of the drops from the several well-represented local vineyards.
Christian and Geraldine run their property with flair and kindness, always happy to talk about their wines and to recommend other activities in the local area. Well-executed and warm, this is a great stop-over or a destination all of its own.
