The Place
Our readers have been swift to point out that, despite the popularity of St Wolfgang itself, a large leafy park and private access to the lake ensure this elegant country house enjoys total privacy and peace. Now well over a century old, the cream and green villa has neatly-trimmed lawns stretching down to the clear, clean waters of the Wolfgangsee.
Back in 1937, the Duke of Windsor, complete with houndstooth suit, stayed here following his abdication of the British throne. Much of what he enjoyed is still visible today.
The Windsor Suite, with its handsome double bed sharing one ornate headboard, has the same glorious views over the lake; the reading-room still looks as if a dropped pin would cause consternation, while the bar, with its high stools, would be a fine set for a Noel Coward play.
The owner, however, is not stuck in a time warp. Although he has preserved the heritage, he has added the best of today with saunas, a tennis court and a landing stage for sailing and windsurfing.
