The Place
In Tyrol’s Otztal Valley, brimming with me-too hotels, Rita stands out for its high number of returning guests. The secret? Keeping it in the family – the Lenglers have been running it for more than 50 years. Guests feel like one of their own here. Although the eponymous Rita is no longer directly involved, her daughters and family friends remain a constant and welcoming presence.
Rooms vary in size and some have been redone more recently than others, but all are priced fairly. Decorated in soothing tones, they have mostly contemporary furnishings that side step being overly sleek or predictable. The suites are especially attractive, with mid-20th century furniture and views on to the garden. There’s a separate house in the garden itself with studio rooms and balconies for extra privacy.
The skiing villages of Solden and Hochsolden are a 15 minute drive. Obergurgl, the highest in Austria (1930m), is half an hour. Opposite reception is a ski hire shop and there’s a ski room under the hotel for storing gear.
Rita is emphatically an all year hotel. Its ‘Summer Card’ unlocks free transport to starting points of mountain walks. Langenfeld is a proper mountain town, ensconced by Alpine peaks of over 3000m. The hotel’s on site guides will take you on tours or direct you to the best spots.
The restaurant, adjacent to a sun-trap terrace, is a reason to visit in its own right. Young chef Jennifer Klotz’s six-course tasting menu is sourced from local producers and changes seasonally.
Of note for readers is a newly renovated hammam and outdoor relaxation pool at the hotel. Further afield, an arrangement with the nearby Aquadome gives guests access to their famous thermal spa.
