The Place
Many hotels promise great comfort and a home-from-home ambience; few achieve both. This one does. ‘My mother has taught me to anticipate our guests’ every wish’, says Elisabeth Walch Fernandez, who runs the Angela (third generation).
Over the last 55 years, the former farmhouse has been transformed into a hotel, without losing its traditional roots. The old back door, cracked with age, with a trumpeting angel, still welcomes guests in the reception area, next to an open fireplace. The decoration is warm with cream walls and soft red fabrics: the key tags, room numbers and guest welcome backs are all made of felt.
All rooms have mountain views and different fabrics, from tartans to Austrian loden and linen. The ‘small’ ones are far from cramped, while the Landhaus suites are spacious and handsome, elegantly furnished without losing the cosy feel of a true country house. The penthouse has a kitchen. Dinner in the elegant dining room runs to six courses in winter, and there’s a light three course menu available in summer, complemented by a small tapas bar where small authentic delicacies can be ordered a la carte.
Just above the village, the hotel is surrounded by meadows full of gentian and cows in summer, and ski slopes in winter. Herr Walch senior, as a former head of the ski school, can advise on the best places to ski, starting right from the door. Terraces and balconies with views over the village and the surrounding mountains make for a relaxing oasis after a long day of skiing or hiking.
