The Place
Twenty years ago this large island off the coast of Rio was a prison, but now, because of its unspoiled beaches, quality diving and inexpensive pousadas it’s a popular holiday destination.
Sagu Mini Resort is one of a few more sophisticated pousadas on the island. Opened in 2002, it’s an authentic Portuguese colonial-style building with vibrant yellow walls and nine simple rooms. All have modern facilities and obligatory hammocks, while the suites have private terraces.
There’s a comfortable veranda that looks out over the bay where turtle spotting is a popular pass-time among guests, though we also saw monkeys, exotic birds and porcupines.
The restaurant and bar are charmingly rustic, and serve a combination of Brazilian and Italian food: authentic and delightful. In a ten-minute walk you’ll reach the busy little fishing town of Vila do Abraao, which has a thriving music scene.
