The Place
Penzance has a lot of good hotels, so it’s hard to stand out, but Justin and Charlie’s Artist Residence does it easily. The Grade II listed Georgian mansion has 22 individually decorated rooms, some with hand painted murals covering the walls, original canvases, and impressive second-hand-chic furniture.
We admire the flexibility here: there are double, house-decorated and artist rooms, and a cottage was added in 2016 sleeping up to 6 people, a good choice for families and groups.
New additions also include a restaurant and lounge bar. The restaurant, The Cornish Barn, is set in the main dining room. All meals are served here, from breakfast to dinner, and there is a seasonal menu making good use of local produce and traditional techniques such as smoking and curing.
The atmosphere is rustic and comfortable, but for added relaxation unwind in the sunny beer garden. The lounge bar, open daily, has a cozy, snug feel. Try their Cornish ales and cocktails inspired by local spirits. It’s located in the old town part of Penzance, a short walk away from the trendy boutique cafes and shops.
