The Place
Fingals is different, and those who love it will really love it – which sums up why we remain enthusiastic about this manor farmhouse in a secluded valley, close to the River Dart. Owner Richard Johnston has created a real home from home where you will be surrounded by art and music.
The house – 17thC with Queen Anne front additions – has plenty of charm, with a stylish blend of new and old furniture, pine and oak. Since our last visit it has undergone some major changes: they now only have two/three rooms in which they offer their exceptional bed-and-breakfast, and six separate self-catered apartments decorated in a relaxed, modern style. Nevertheless if you’re self-catered you can sometimes book breakfast in the dining room, and a freezer menu is available too.
Fingals is an exceptionally relaxed place – you pour your own drinks, eat breakfast until 10 in the morning – and those who insist on everything being just so are likely to be disappointed. A laid-back place to stay with a laid-back, yet thoroughly professional, proprietor.
