The Place
Hidden in the South Downs National Park, the Jolly Sportsman is a warm and homely country pub with a sense of slow living. There are just four adequately sized yet comfortable bedrooms and a terrace for great views of the countryside.
We found the team’s dedication to maintaining a low carbon footprint especially impressive. They have adapted age-old cooking techniques, such as cooking over a wood fire, as well as baking their own bread. Working closely with local suppliers means the team can offer fresh fish from the coast and seasonal dishes such as fermented pearl barley risotto. A complimentary wine list featuring over forty wines accompanies lunch and dinner, served in a pub surrounded by vineyards.
In the winter food is served inside, but in the warmer months you can eat in the garden. The recently opened garden bar (spring 2023) is open every Friday and on weekends. Sip a refreshing Montenegro Spritz or order Jersey rock oysters. We especially enjoyed the easy-going atmosphere of the garden, with its wild flowers and hedging.
If you are staying a couple of days and wondering what to do, try the East Chiltington Circular Walk or the Hassocks to East Chiltington Walk – reception will provide information.
We see it as not just a great bed and breakfast, but a weekend destination in its own right with well above average food.
