Why we love it...

A calming escape in the heart of the Lake District

The Place

Rothay Manor positions itself accurately as Ambleside’s boutique hotel. It is a smart country house with 23 bedrooms and its location on the edge of Ambleside is uniquely appealing and charming. You’re in an oasis of large grounds surrounded by fencing, removed from Lake District tourist razzmatazz, in your own calm world.

The main building, which contains 15 rooms – the rest are in a newly built Pavilion – has the feel of a smaller place. Old panelling has been retained, but painted with contemporary colours. Prints of local mountain and fell scenes, some by distinguished artists such as Francis Towne adorn the walls. It manages to be elegant, stylish and homely. The furniture is traditional and rustic. The bedrooms are luxurious and individually designed and decorated but manage not to spill over in to fussiness.

The Pavilion is designed to bring the outdoors inside, with big windows providing plenty of natural light. Soft, country-inspired colour schemes blend with opulent fabrics and furnishings. Bathroom extras are top of the range.

The kitchen is led by Michelin trained head chef Aaron Lawrence and the menus offer sophisticated and innovative dishes celebrating seasonal ingredients from quality local suppliers. They are currently offering a new Spring tasting menu, available alongside the elevated A La Carte offering in the Dining Room, as well as a new all-day dining menu for a more relaxed offering, which is also available via room service.

You can walk to Ambleside’s centre in 10 minutes and of course this is a key launch pad for any number of Lakes expeditions, including a recent new offering, mentored wild swims organised by the hotel.

You’re only about 50 minutes here from the remote far end of Borrowdale, where starting Seathwaite there’s the classic hike up to Styhead Tarn. For a unique and stimulating description of this expedition, see Walks for Mind and Spirit, published by Duncan Petersen.
