The Place
Arriving in Bowland Bridge you could feel you’re in a sleepy, lost village. But step into this pub and you’ll get a lively buzz. Guests, locals and walkers seem to have a common cause: the wonder of the fells around Lake Windermere (and retreating when the weather turns).
The lively atmosphere arises partly from the enthusiasm of American co-owner Andrew Black, whose friendliness and curiosity encourage a sense of community among the guests. Restoring this quintessential country pub is the joint venture of long-time friends and day-dreamers, Andrew and Simon Rayner-Langmead.
With quirky artworks, including a Tracy Emin, the Hare and Hounds has energized this old Cumbrian village, and its reputation is growing. Each of the four bedrooms (delightfully named in the vernacular of Cumbrian Shepherds: Yan (one), Tyan (two), Tethera (three), Methera (four) is a testament to classic country cottages, with a palette of warm and inviting hues of earthy tones and soft, muted greens.
The daily menu offers a selection of classic Cumbrian dishes and traditional fare. The pub often hosts residencies for talented chefs, so the menu will change. Breakfast is ordered the night before using a checklist. Fresh milk is put outside your room every morning.
