Why we love it...

Gastronomic hotspot

The Place

Halfway between Scunthorpe and the Humber bridge is one of Britain’s gastronomic hotspots. Furthermore, you can sleep in great comfort no more than a few paces from the table. The hotel is in the middle of Winteringham, a quiet country village on the south bank of the Humber estuary. Colin and Bex McGurran have taken over here since our last edition, and Colin, the chef, is relishing the challenge of maintaining the very high culinary standards set by their predecessors, the Schwabs. Having lived and worked in such diverse places as Zambia, the UAE and France, Colin’s influences are eclectic.
The rambling 16thC house is full of nooks and crannies and still has many original features such as exposed timbers, period fireplaces and oak panelling. These are set off by the warm colours of walls and fabrics and the antique furniture. The bedrooms are all uniquely decorated and have recently been renovated, and the bathrooms modernised. There are four in the main house (with not a single right-angle between them), three in the courtyard, one in a cottage round the corner, and two more made from a dovecote a couple of minutes away.
The McGurrans are adding a further dining room and two more sitting rooms, providing better disabled facilities.
