Why we love it...

Superb Irish country house and restaurant

The Place

This could be called a ‘cutting edge’ country house. No faded chintzes or family portraits here. Semi-minimalist interiors, with bold, bright colours and vast expanses of gleaming wood floors look as if they have come out of glossy magazines. The flooring, one learns, is teak from environmentally managed forests in Zimbabwe and the pointed, cone-shaped lamps in the restaurant can be bought in Cork.

Behind the rejuvenated main house is a coach house with floors painted white and elsewhere much orange, pink and yellow; a rustic cottage; and restaurant with an outdoor timber terrace. Hens provide fresh eggs; organic produce for the table comes from the kitchen garden; Barnabrow even has its own spring for lashings of crystal-clear water.

Barnabrow House’s main business is now weddings, but B&B is still available Sunday to Wednesday, and all week in the quieter months. Barnabrow is now also open for lunch on Sundays.
