The Place
Sabine and Ian Richards bought this mellow country house, built 1810, in 2004. They have redecorated in a way that makes it look unchanged, though it is in fact new and fresh. You’ll find tartan carpeting, a malt whisky bar, a sunny conservatory for breakfast and a shallow Georgian staircase leading up to the light and spacious first-floor bedrooms. The food is highly rated and we thought it lived up to its reputation.
There’s excellent salmon fishing at hand along the Forss, which flows in an arc around the hotel. With open, easy casting, it’s well suited to beginners and children as well as the more experienced. In spring and summer the banks – thick with wild flowers – make for pretty walking. Ideal for a relaxed country break.
