Bought by the community of Assynt in 2005, Glencanisp Lodge has a quintessentially country house feel. With the path to Mountain Suilven starting on their doorstep, it is aptly situated for exploring the Assynt wilderness. The decoration of this 19thC hunting lodge maintains the Victorian charm that Sam and Rachael Hawkins, who run the hotel, have strived to keep: wooden headboards in the bedrooms, tartan carpets, and a stag’s head in the dining room stand out the most.
Almost everything served in the restaurant is Scottish and the menu changes daily, depending on what can be sourced locally. This could explain its limited range of choice, although we still think that there is something to tickle everyone’s fancy, including vegetarian options. Expect to see locally smoked salmon, local eggs, organic porridge, and homemade granola at breakfast.
Glencanisp Lodge has seven spacious guest bedrooms, all with either private or en suite bathrooms, and four have king-sized beds. Most rooms have either a garden or mountain view, but the views from the public rooms make up for those that don’t.
The lodge is an ideal base for walkers, but is also great for those seeking a more relaxing experience, with the white sandy beaches of the Loch Druim Suardalain coastline just five miles away.
