Why we love it...

Elegant but relaxed

The Place

Functional, but human. Old Victorian houses, such as this, often have too much brown wood for modern taste, but Shieldaig Lodge manages not to be depressing. The building itself is impressive – a substantial restored Victorian hunting lodge set in the beauty of the West Highlands and nestled next to Shieldaig Bay. It retains the charm of its 19thC origins.

The muted colour palette, tartan pattern details and artfully positioned grandfather clocks underscore the old-fashioned home from home feel. Golden mirror frames and crystal chandeliers are a touch of elegance.

Each of the 12 bedrooms is quite sophisticated, complete with antique pieces and tartan details. We recommend, of course, a bedroom with a sea view. The Suite has a large bay window with an alluring view over the waters and hills – a cushy little niche for a morning coffee or immersing yourself in a book.

A serious selection of whiskies and gins is available at the Liberator bar, where you also have the opportunity to blend your own whisky under the guidance of the Lodge’s whisky expert.
