Why we love it...

Stylish interiors with great food

The Place

This is Edinburgh chef and restaurant entrepreneur Tom Kitchin’s first venture into food with rooms, opened December 2018 and a major addition to the area’s lunching and dining opportunities. On the main street of Gullane, it was built as an 18thC coaching inn, became a petrol station and then evolved back into a traditional inn. Its most recent incarnation as a stylish pub with a restaurant and rooms, cements this place as a destination in its own right.

First impressions are very good: smartly designed but not contrived, and friendly, competent staff. Don’t miss the garden room which gives on to a stylish courtyard with an outdoor fire and barbecues.

The bedrooms, although stylish and very comfortable, are a little – only a little – eclipsed by downstairs. The star of the show is The Stables Restaurant with its high ceiling, unusual hoop lighting and gastropub food – we enjoyed oysters with an intensely zingy vinegar and shallot sauce, thickly sliced smoked salmon with dill dressing and rye bread, succulent Highland wagyu burger and an unusual take on ham and eggs. The free afternoon tea is exceptional and the bar stocks around 140 whiskies. Crispy pig ears star in the pre-dinner nibbles.

Smart and sophisticated but relaxed in equal measure – an ideal stopover in an often unexplored area of the Scottish coast.
