Driving through the windy lanes cutting through the Shropshire hills from Oswestry, you can easily miss this attractive Georgian House tucked away off the main road. It nestles serenely among trees and green fields and you will be taken aback by the views that stretch (on a clear day) to the Welsh mountains. The dining room and sitting areas are decorated in warm colours; open log fires for the chilly winter evenings are perfect. In the summer watch the spectacular sunsets with a sun-downer. If you prefer to drink or dine outside, there’s a delightful little patio stretching round the side of the hotel. Look closely and you’ll see modern touches about the place, such as abstract art.
The bedrooms are large, spacious and comfortable, decorated in relaxing pastel shades, with large fluffy towels provided in all the en suite bathrooms (some with spa baths and Jacuzzis) and fresh flowers on arrival. Four of the bedrooms are in the coach house, which is ideal for guests with animals. They each have spectacular views and their own private little patio.
Chef Dave Morris has been here for 15 years and his cooking is perfect for the place – we enjoyed goats’ cheese and maple syrup mousse and rose veal with Madeira cream sauce. The food is as you would expect: hearty and fresh-cooked, mostly with organic and local produce. The small bar by the entrance is staffed by helpful and friendly staff who can advise you on sightseeing, walking, or shopping in Wales or Shropshire.
