Why we love it...

Superb food

The Place

Emma and Tim Ford have built up a reputation for fine food at this restaurant with rooms in Somerset. Tim is one of Britain’s finest chefs: he trained at Sharrow Bay and spent time in several top hotels refining his art. Previously he was head chef at Summer Lodge in Evershot, but he and his wife Emma, who was front-of-house there, have now been running Little Barwick for 17 years.

Locally-sourced meat, game and fish provide the cornerstone of Tim’s cooking (our inspector enjoyed pink roasted rump of Dorset lamb with aubergine caviar and black olive sauce), while the lunch menu is a simpler variation of the dinner menu. The wine list is extensive, including many wines by the glass or half bottle.

Little Barwick has featured in these pages for years, recommended for its friendly informality, and this has remained the case through changes of ownership. The Fords have completed a programme of redecoration that has freshened up both the interior and exterior of this lovely listed Georgian dower house. The dining room has recently been redecorated with a Farrow and Ball stripe wallpaper. Bedrooms remain cheerful with fresh flowers, real coffee in cafetières and homemade shortbreads.
