Why we love it...

Relaxing countryside retreat with excellent food

The Place

Imaginative, top-chef food comes to rural Somerset. This is the first venture outside London (opened 2023) of respected New Zealand chef Margot Henderson of the Rochelle Canteen in Shoreditch. Besides overseeing the food here alongside Head chef Nye Smith, she runs a catering business while husband Fergus is the proprietor of St John Restaurant, Smithfield.

The short, often-changed menu is a foodie statement in its own right, using of course much local produce from well-regarded local suppliers. Duck leg comes with white beans cooked in the juice of a pig’s trotter; a bacon chop gets lentils and ‘green sauce’; venison sits beside beetroot and horseradish. Among the starters are celeriac soup and sage; venison ragu and gnocchi; fried pheasant and celeriac remoulade. The wine list is full of surprises. All the mains were £23 or less as we went to press, and the starters not more than £13, friendlier than many a rural dining pub which can’t claim a nationally known chef. The bar menu offered fried pig’s head and ketchup. Service is unstuffy, swift and knowledgeable.

The rooms are perfect examples of what we look for, more like bedrooms in a private country house than a hotel, very nicely judged and understated, starting at £220 as we went to press. Specially crafted beds are among the most comfortable we’ve slept in and all five rooms are notably spacious including the bathrooms, one of which has a sofa for chilling after your soak. The decoration is in perfect taste and even the choice of books in the room was one off. There are intentionally no radios or TVs, encouraging you to forget the ‘real’ world and relax in a different zone.

The garden, yet to come into its own as we went to press, could be another reason to visit: it’s the work of Libby Russell of Mazullo Russell Garden Design.

Working alongside Margot and the team, owner Max Wigram is a friend of Margot’s and loves her food. This is easily worth a detour of 50 miles, or a weekend away in its own right. Ask for the maps showing country walks from the door.
