Why we love it...

Wales' original gastropub

The Place

The location is uninteresting, beside a busy-ish road, and you might think this is any old Welsh pub. But there’s a clue it may be something different: the exterior is painted a mellow ochre, the colour seen all over Tuscany. Inside, a log fire is raised above floor level, radiating heat in two directions, into the bar and the adjacent dining room. Tongue-and-groove panelling is painted a brilliant blue. Nooks and crannies are filled with books: we spied Debrett and Who’s Who. Upstairs are seven fresh, but perhaps boxey bedrooms with homey decoration, again using bright colours. Some have four-poster beds and all have extra beds for children.

The food is distinctly above average for the price. Home-made soda bread arrives on a simple wooden board. There’s a large choice of interesting wines by the glass, including prosecco. The Griffin can claim to be Wales’s original gastropub and was named the Good Pub Guide’s dining pub of the year for 2014. It’s included in the current Top 50 Gastropubs list. Off the main dining room there’s another smaller one with two tables seating eight (great for a party) in front of the AGA, where the day’s fresh stocks simmer. Gwenann Davies, former Senior Sous Chef at Lush by Tom Kerridge, has recently joined their team as their new Head Chef.
