Why we love it...

Welcoming country inn

The Place

A traditional, unspoilt inn with above average food and simple but comfortable bedrooms (try one of the character room which have pretty brass or four poster beds.) They are perhaps a little feminine, but decorated in a comfortable, unpretentious country style. You should get a warm welcome, and the mood is helped along by flagstones and roaring inglenook fires surrounded by old blackened beams with traditional brasses on display. Our inspector found the dining room atmospheric, however the bar seemed the place for informal eating and drinking with the locals or alternatively the beer garden which has truly spectacular views over the Welsh hills and valleys.
Heartening food comes from the reputable head chef Grant Williams, who had been there 20 years when we last visited – a long time in this business, so there’s probably a happy team here. The inn has been in the Good Food Guide for four consecutive years.
The West Arms is located in a natural spot for an inn, where three cattle drovers’ tracks converge on the way to the markets at Oswestry, Chirk and Wrexham. Wonderful walking in the Berwyn Hills or Ceiriog Valley is a must if staying here.
