The Place
The charm of this place to stay lies in how it deftly balances the best of the new century and the last. It’s got some years on it, but over 44 years the Buchanan family have gradually transformed this historic coaching inn into a real gem.
When booking, take your pick between the traditional vintage offerings above the pub or the hideaway rooms in the artfully converted stable block. Exposed low-beam ceilings, flagged stone floors and crackling log fires in the public spaces are all welcome calling cards. Parts of the building do show their age but this is inoffensive and only adds to its rustic warmth.
Pickering, a peaceful market town, serves as a gateway to the North York Moors and the coastline. Nearby Whitby can be reached by the well-preserved steam railway, an attraction in its own right.
The bar and restaurant offer local produce and a menu with all the classics you’d expect. It’s copper-bottomed country style fare that hits the mark where it counts: high quality ingredients paired with friendly service from the staff. The breakfast includes smoked kippers, home-made pastries and freshly brewed coffee and is offered to guests and locals alike.
Head Chef Darren Clemmit recently celebrated his 37th year at the Inn. Sitting by the fire after he’s cooked you dinner could almost convince you that you should do the same.
