The Place
Le Maquis is set in a breathtakingly pretty spot, perhaps the prettiest of any hotel in Corsica, on a little inlet in the Gulf of Ajaccio, over-looking verdant gardens and a beatiful stretch of sandy beach. Proprietress Mme Salini is very much in charge, and her hotel, opened in 1972, is carefully decorated, with comfortable bedrooms. Some have wood pannelling on the walls, most have traditional rich, heavy curtains, which might seem odd for a coastal hotel where you might usually find light colours and more minimalist decoration. Ask for a room overlooking the sea, with a terrace. In L’Arbousier, the hotel’s restaurant, excellent meals are served by the pool in warm weather, overlooking the bay – mostly Mediterranean-style seafood and traditional Corsican dishes. A quiet, sophisticated hotel on an otherwise crowded coast; for nature lovers the wild beauty of inland Corsica is close at hand.
