Why we love it...

Authentic, relaxing retreat

The Place

The Grand Duc is the eagle owl, presiding (stuffed) over the fireplace in the beamed dining room of this delightful, modest little logis. It has been in the same family for 46 years, having been taken over 3 years ago by the former owners’ daughter and her husband who have worked there for 30 years.

A refurbished maison de maître (the maître made his living from the surrounding forests), The Grand Duc is set in the middle of a flower-filled, open park with tables scattered around its central fountain.

The wide central hallway has original stone walls and the fine old staircase has terracotta tiles with oak nosings and wrought-iron balustrade. There’s a large dining room and a superb modern kitchen, where almost everything is homemade on-site. Dinner is cooked by Sandrine, changing with the seasons and offerings from local suppliers. Alongside excellent food, Jérémie will advise you on how best to combine your meal with the regional wines on offer. There is a pleasant terrace, looking on to a fountain and old lime trees; in summer you can dine outside by candlelight.

The bedrooms and bathrooms are large and elegantly simple, decorated mainly in neutral shades with wooden floors.

Admirers return year after year to write flattering remarks in the visitors’ book: “Gets better all the time – everything, reception, service, food and comfort is excellent.” Our reporter found it nothing less than charming.
