The Place
On a bank of the Sorgue, this lovely old former paper mill, now the home of Poppy, widow of Pierre Salinger (once famous as JFK’s press secretary) is protected from the world by trees and lawns. Poppy used to be an antiques dealer and her professional eye shows in the style she has bought to the house. Guests have the run of the downstairs – including an open kitchen and an honesty bar – and upstairs the bedrooms are washed in striking colours with some beautiful antiques and little pieces of Limoges.
The suites have wonderful views. There are complimentary trays in the suites and a fridge on the upstairs landings for guests’ use. Lunch and dinner are available, but must be reserved in advance. The head chef, Emmanuel, is Pierre Salinger’s step-son and changes the menu daily, based on his finds at the local farmers’ market. One guest describes the food as ‘simple and fresh’. There are some interesting sculptures in the garden. There is also a Pierre Salinger Museum to look round, which is complete with memorabilia from his distinguished journalistic career and the White House.
