The Place
Unlike many other small hotel owners in Germany, the proprieters of the beautiful little Hotel Dorer in Schonwald have no ambitions to make their establishment any bigger. Lying in the heart of the Black Forest, it is a pleasant surprise to discover that the interior is not filled with the wood carvings and cuckoo clocks that typify this area. Instead, there are interesting antiques and elegant, understated furnishings set against plain panelling. Visitors are usually fascinated by the extraordinary old gramophone on the first floor; you may well pass it on your way to one of the supremely comfortable bedrooms. Their decoration, though rooted in tradition, is uncluttered, and careful consideration has been given to space and light. Most rooms give out on to either a balcony or shared terrace, from where you can enjoy the fabulous surroundings.
Diners will find the food interesting and well cooked by the master of the house, Herr Scherer, who is as keen to get away from the traditional menu of this region as from the typical decoration. A recent visitor praises the comfort and friendly atmosphere here.
