The Place
Herr Fischer was appalled at the idea that there might be telephones in his guest rooms, ‘Our guests come here to relax’. Most are on holiday and Herr Fischer offers them plenty of relaxation opportunities. The bedrooms ooze space and com- fort, encouraging long lie-ins after a day in the clear Ammergau mountain air. The modern bedroom decoration may be somewhat ordinary, but half the rooms in this old chalet have a balcony, and those in the new wing at the back open on to a terrace. You can contemplate Ettal’s grand Benedictine abbey church (famous for its ceiling paintings by the Baroque painter Zeiller) and the surrounding mountains, from all of them. There is a sauna, a steam room and a solarium to chill out in, a Stube, and, for sightseeing, Oberammergau and King Ludwig’s fairy-tale castles are an easy drive.
Posthotel Ettal has close associations with skiing, starting with the cross-country ski route 50 m behind the hotel, and nearby downhill skiing. Herr Fischer cooks for the German Olympic ski team, so expect breakfast to transform your energy levels. But you may prefer to eat in your room rather than endure the music that is sometimes piped into the dining rooms.
