The Place
You would never guess that the Domicil, in the heart of Bonn, is part of a chain. Despite being part of the Best Western group, there’s little uniformity. Designed by Thomas van Valentyn, it thinks of itself (with 44 rooms) as an intimate place to stay. We normally think this is large for our guide, even for a city hotel, but this hotel has enough charm to earn its place.
Good taste is found in every corner and in every detail. Although modern in decoration, the style is classic rather than cold. The bar, for example, has a 1920s feel about it with its red top, black leather stools, and rows of bottles reflected in the mirror behind. The restaurant doesn’t quite achieve this individuality, but is still pleasant enough. The stylish bedrooms are each different from the next, and if the hotel’s interior designers were going for the ‘home from home’ look, they have certainly achieved it. Simple bedcovers, light walls, fresh flowers and framed prints avoid any risk of blandness. Bonn is the place to visit if you’re a fan of the great composer Beethoven and Domicil is the place to stay if you’re looking for a retreat within this bustling city.
