The Place
Only for real lovers of the simple life, this little settlement of old-fashioned cottages has no modern conveniences. Drinking water comes from the well and lighting is by paraffin lamp (though bathrrom lights and fridges in each house run off solar energy). Inside, the cottages have stone floors, ceilings made from calamus reed in the tradional way, wooden furniture, and striped wool cushions and blankets. If this sounds a little spartan in its simplicity, that is because it is, but the complete lack of 21st century gadgetry is wonderfully relaxing once you get used to it.
Truly a great escape; ideal for the over-stressed city dweller. However, if you feel the need to seek out some excitement, there are dozens of bars and tavernas spread out along the beach and road through Makrigialos.
