The Place
Cannero Riviera is one of the quietest resorts on Lake Maggiore and its most desirable hotels lie right on the shore. Only the ferry landing-stage and a dead-end road separate the Cannero from the waters of the lake. The building was once a monastery, though only an old stone column, a couple of vaulted passageways, a quiet courtyard and a beautifully preserved 17thC well suggest it is anything other than a modern hotel. The emphasis is on comfort and relaxation, and the atmosphere is very friendly, thanks largely to the attention of the family Gallinotto-Cavagnera, who now run the hotel.
Downstairs, big windows and terraces make the most of the setting. The restaurant focuses on the lake, with an outdoor terrace running alongside. Bedrooms are light and well cared for with adequate bathrooms, and the restoration of a next-door house provides an additional 15 rooms plus some new apartments.
There are gorgeous views of lake and mountains from front rooms, all with balconies, though many guests are happy overlooking the pool at the back – which, if anything, is quieter. By day this provides a delightful spot to take a dip or hang out under the yellow parasols.
