The Place
Locanda4 is different – not just a B&B, not a mountain chalet, but a collection of four large suites, each with unique features, in a large 18thC mansion. It is located just outside Valtournenche, a small village at 1,500m set against the majestic backdrop of the Alps, a short walk from the ski lifts and close to a number of walking trails.
The house has a rustic feel with plenty of wood and stone and large balconies from which to admire the Matterhorn. But the real highlight are the suites: for a really relaxing stay you may choose the Red Suite, with a whirlpool bathtub just a few steps away from your bed. Unwinding in the warm water in winter while watching the snow-clad peaks outside the window may be hard to forget. The Larch Suite is a triumph of timber with a pleasantly snug feeling. Have a cup of tea by the fireplace while you wait for your Turkish bath to warm up. The Yellow and Pink Suites enjoy maybe the best views of the valley and the Matterhorn, and they both have small saunas (the Yellow Suite has a large window overlooking the road, even though the noise barely reaches it). The suites also have iPod docking stations and CD players. With thick carpets, pine cones scattered over the shelves, candles and books in every room, it is easy to forget where you’re staying and to wish that this was your home.
Dinner has to be arranged in advance and is prepared with flair by the charming owner Emanuela: typical Valdostan dishes, unpretentious and flavourful, such as cheese fondue and polenta. Breakfast is served from 7am – arrive early if you like to have the bigger choice.
