The Place
Castello di Volpaia can claim to be one of the most beautiful of the many attractive fortified villages in central Tuscany. It stands (with just 52 inhabitants) apparently unchanged since the 12thC, on a peak overlooking rolling Chianti countryside. Volpaia and the Castello di Volpaia winery, owned and operated by the Stianti Mascheroni family, are all but synonymous, producing some outstanding wines and extra virgin olive oil. Tours around the impressive wine cellar can be arranged, with tastings included.
Accommodation is in five comfortably restored apartments in the Castello and in nearby farmhouses. Guests can eat at the winery restaurant, the Osteria con cucina, with the owners if they wish. Giovanna Stianti Mascheroni also teaches cookery classes for those who are keen to discover the secrets of Tuscan cuisine. A useful little book on walks around Volpaia is on sale in the wine shop.
