The Place
Pilgrims bound for Rome found rest and refreshment at nearby Bagno Vignoni; today this hotel also aims to be an oasis.
In an area of outstanding natural beauty – described by one guest as ‘quintessentially Tuscany’ – Osteria dell Orcia welcomes guests into its unpretentious white buildings, once a 16thC coaching station. After many years of disrepair it was finally converted into a hotel in the 1990s and now prides itself on being a calm retreat.
With just 16 bedrooms, there is an intimate atmosphere. ‘Classic’ and ‘Deluxe’ rooms are nicely decorated – natural colours echo the surrounding countryside, with exposed beams and terracotta tiles giving a traditional Tuscan feel. The ‘Suites’ are more expensive, with canopied beds and handsome antique furniture.
Continuing the Tuscan theme, the restaurant is fiercely patriotic, serving local dishes and wines.
Breakfast is served on the patio, which afterwards turns into a popular sun deck.
