The house looks classically Renaissance, but actually dates back to the 13th century. It overlooks sloping hillsides of mown grass and miles of unspoiled countryside, much of it part of the villa’s own estate. Inside, many original features remain: an old chapel, 14thC frescoes, massive interior doors, and timbered ceilings. Furnishings blend with this venerable setting, including some valuable antiques, notably a vast and regal four-poster bed and an 18thC sofa. Plain white walls offset the dark wood of beams and furniture. Most of the bedrooms are handsomely furnished and spacious – in fact some might find them decidedly grand. One satisfied guest found them very comfortable indeed and well worth the price. Bathrooms are beautifully tiled in blue and white. The open-plan sitting room and dining room are traditionally furnished and fairly formal; the restaurant is renowned, and local dignitaries make the long trek to enjoy its food. The staff are kind and welcoming.
Get directions: it’s not hard to find, but is in an isolated location, some way south of the village of Vicchio di Mugello.
