The Place
This former monastery is an excellent bargain for those who like the quiet life. Situated in the forest of Pietralunga, Upper Umbria, between Citta di Castello and Gubbio, there are panoramic views over the Carpina Valley. It’s proper modern agriturismo but it retains the community feel of a family business – father Gino mans the reception and his children act as tour guides.
Rooms are decorated in authentic rustic style with functional but assuring touches like wrought iron and perforated brick. There are suites in an external barn and separate farmhouse. If you prefer a starrier view there are pitches for camping under tree cover.
It’s still a working organic farm with a sizeable forested area. Trees are felled to fuel the open fireplaces and their fruit goes to make the jam and liqueurs served in the guesthouse and for sale in the farm shop. Cooking lessons from family member Silviana are available to introduce guests to Umbrian recipes.
The Wizard’s Garden, a clearing inside the farm with a small lake, invites guests to practice birdwatching. There’s a wellness garden and a pool (fittingly shaped like an acorn) also on the property. A unique attraction within walking distance is “Il Quercione”, or the ‘Big Oak’. At 80ft tall and 600 years of age, its standout feature is beyond words – you’ll just have to see for yourself.
