The Place
Halfway between Rome and Florence, perched almost impossibly on Umbrian clifftops, is the small city of Orvieto. This is where Arrigo Misciattelli grew up, in a four storey palazzo in the city centre that dates back over 3000 years. Today, with his wife Ellen, the couple welcomes visitors to their ancient home in the heart of Orvieto: Palazzo Misciattelli.
From the outside, the palazzo looks just as it did all those years ago: four storeys of stone walls and a terracotta tiled roof. Inside however, are three newly renovated luxury apartments. A pleasing blend of old and new, a thoughtful renovation has brought the interiors up to date whilst retaining the palazzo’s original charm.
The bedrooms are smart and sleek: blue tones on the walls; ornately framed mirrors; dark oak furniture. They are spacious without being sparse. The public spaces are more vibrant, with floral curtains hung in the high arches of the doorways and colourful armchairs that create an interesting contrast with the old wooden beams supporting the old structure. It’s bright and open, but it hasn’t been overly modernised.
With just three apartments (Osa, Aldegonda and Ripalta), there is plenty of privacy. For a quiet moment in a busy city, you can relax on the roof terrace or in the private inner courtyard. Guests also have complimentary access to the gym, jacuzzi and sauna.
Minutes from the duomo and plenty of cafes and restaurants, there is plenty to explore here on foot. Or, for those who want to venture a little further, guided activities are in abundance, including vineyard tours, hiking, and food excursions.
Arrigo and Ellen know everything and everyone in Orvieto, so there is no one better to offer you recommendations in the area.
