The Place
Under hour from Venice, and close to the Brenta Riviera, this hotel is excellent for those wishing to see more of Venice than palaces and canals. Patriarca is in the small town of Mirano, well placed for day trips to Venice, but authentic Italy: it’s full of small friendly bars and close to several attractions.
The hotel stands in well-landscaped, centuries-old gardens full of distractions: a large, grand swimming pool is the centrepiece, along with a smaller hydro-massage pool and some well-kept tennis courts and a football pitch. There’s also a cute cocktail and snacks bar. Guests seeking quiet time by the pool: please note that wristbands are rented out to locals during peak seasons.
The building dates back to the 18th century, and period features and traditional design are common throughout: exposed beams, marble flooring and pretty glass doors. Bedrooms aren’t as grand as the outside or communal areas, but nevertheless are well-designed and decorated, with polished walnut desks, regal red curtains and bedcovers, and fresh flowers.
Staff are ‘helpful and welcoming’, with buckets of local knowledge: great for those wanting to stray from the beaten track. Bicycles are available for guests wanting explore. During the evening you can lounge in the library or stroll around Mirano’s bars and cafes: the local spritzers are a must-try.
