The Place
Much of Es Reco’s charm is in its splendid, open views, but the interior has its attractions too, decorated in Mallorcan country-house style: local-style wooden furniture in light pine, Spanish fabrics and the occasional piece of antique furniture as an eye-catcher. The highly regarded restaurant is well known throughout the island for its home cooking, and its five-course sample menus can claim to be the best way for anyone to get to know Mallorca’s culinary specialities. Beautiful walks can be taken from the hotel, such as the climb through a pine wood to the 15thC monastery complex of Santuari de Sant Honorat.
The nearby village of Randa sits between two mountains whose origins are the subject of a quaint local legend. One of the giants who lived on Mallorca wanted to build a house in the north. But the best building materials were to be found in the south. To cut a long story short, that’s where he headed. Where Randa is today, he lost his footing, spilling the contents of the two baskets he was carrying, and this is how the mountains of Randa and Galdent appeared.
