The Place
Perched on a ridge high above the rolling green tropical valleys of southern Sri Lanka’s tea country, this upmarket hotel is a charming retreat. Several immaculate thatched cabins cling to the hillside, which have been converted from the former tea factory using local materials. This is a peaceful haven where hours could be lost taking in the stunning views from the hotel’s relaxing platform bar or the mountaintop pool.
If you get itchy feet there are some incredible walks taking in the captivating views from Ella’s Rock overlooking the south coast and Indian Ocean. The nearby town of Ella is a small, typically Sri Lankan town, worth a visit if only to buy samples of local tea – it is also the start one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys from Ella to Kandy.
Prices are at the upper end for Sri Lanka but are well worth the cost if a proper retreat is what you’re looking for.
