The Place
Many people would be happy to pay to walk round this village whose history dates back to the 12thC.The narrow lanes and half-timbered houses, dominated by the monastery, stand right on the bank of the River Rhine, between the Bodensee and the smaller Untersee. However, it’s not been over-visited and still feels like a living town, not a tourist attraction.
This 300-year-old inn, on the tranquil shore of Lake Rhein between Upper and Lower Lake Constance, is only a short distance from the tourist spots in the area. Bedrooms are a mix of old and new, sophisticated and plain. Some have white- washed walls and monochrome furniture, so have extravagant light fittings, heavy classical furniture and fabric-covered walls. The best is luxurious and worth the extra expense for a romantic weekend.
Our reporter enjoyed the restaurant, ‘like a gentle-men’s club, all polished dark wood’ and the exquisite breakfast room. After dinner, guests can retire to the smoker’s room for a cigar and glass of whiskey.
The cinema (free for guests) is a small, elegantly decorated room where you can watch classics, blockbusters and family movies. Movies can be requested if you book in advance.
