Most members of the Landgasthof association are old wayside inns, so the totally modern Seehotel Schiff comes as a shock, particularly in this area known for its ancient half-timbered buildings. Set on the shore of the Untersee,‘this is more like a Mediterranean hotel’, according to our reporter, who picked out the quarry-tiled floor and plain white plaster walls as examples of a ‘seaside feel’.
Only 30 years old, the terracotta stucco building with its pale pine balconies is shaded by mature chestnut trees, while the restaurant and terrace look on to the water. Swans paddling past moored motor and sailing boats complete the idyllic scene. With the ferry stop nearby and the cycle path at the door, the Schiff makes a popular stop on a day out but the cooking has a fine reputation, offering fish from the lake such as pike, carp and perch, though some visitors have commented that the food can be overpriced (CHF 40-50 per person). Mannenbach’s own vineyards provide the ideal accompaniment, a chilled bottle of Riesling/Sylvaner. Bedrooms are light, bright and neat: white walls and yellow pine complete the holiday atmosphere. There have been mixed reports about the cleanliness of the hotel.
